On 14 March 2023, the UK Medicines regulator approved an application to reclassify the erectile dysfunction medication Cialis. When marketed asCialis Together(tadalafil 10mg), it will be a ‘P’ (pharmacy) medication, and so available ‘over the counter’ in pharmacies – see. This follows the 2018, ‘P’ classification of (sildenafil 50mg) which has been available OTC, without a prescription, since then.

This new classification of tadalafil 10mg will enable men who suffer from ED to obtain it safely from a local pharmacy.
Sanofi, the drug manufacturer, is expected to launch Cialis Together later in 2023. Cialis Together will be available to purchase in pharmacies without a prescription by men over 18 with erectile dysfunction. Cialis Together tablets will contain 10mg tadalafil and the maximum pack size will be 8 tablets. Other doses and pack sizes of Cialis and tadalafil will still be available on prescription through doctors and specially trained pharmacists. Before purchase in a pharmacy there must be an assessment with a pharmacist, who will check that Cialis Together is appropriate and safe, or whether consultation with a GP is necessary.
Men suffering with ED will have another treatment option with the convenience of purchasing it in their local pharmacy, including pharmacies found inside supermarkets (eg. Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s). The pharmacist will ask some health questions, may check blood pressure, and will advise on treatment with Cialis Together or Viagra Connect, or the need to consult a GP. Pharmacies usually have a private room for such discussions.
Cialis Together is a 10mg tadalafil product for use at least 30 minutes prior to anticipated sexual activity. Its effects can last. It is not recommended for daily use. The maximum recommended dose of Cialis Together will be one tablet in 24 hours. Prescription Cialis and tadalafil will still be available at different doses.

A new study finds that people who are taking the drug Sildenafil or Viagra may have an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.
Researchers at the University of Southern California and the University of Texas San Antonio studied the relationship between the drug and cancer, and found that a small dose of the drug could actually increase the risk.
A new study suggests that a small dose of the drug may have a more significant effect than is generally recommended for the treatment of men with prostate cancer. The researchers looked at data from more than 100,000 patients taking Sildenafil, Viagra, or other ED drugs for erectile dysfunction.
Their analysis found that patients taking Sildenafil had a 1.7-2.4-fold increase in the risk of prostate cancer. Patients who took the drug also had a 0.3-fold increased risk of prostate cancer.
“In this study, we have demonstrated that patients taking Sildenafil or Viagra have a greater risk of developing prostate cancer compared to patients who took the drug alone,” said lead author Dr. Steven Nissen, the lead author of the study. “These findings have important clinical implications and warrant further studies to confirm our findings and explore the mechanisms of action for this drug.”
For the researchers, the study involved nearly 3.1 million patients with erectile dysfunction, a group that accounts for about half of all prescriptions filled in the United States. Viagra, the most popular ED drug, has a 10 percent risk of developing prostate cancer, while Sildenafil has a 15 percent risk.
The researchers conducted a separate analysis of data from more than 200,000 patients taking Sildenafil and other drugs for erectile dysfunction. The results showed that patients taking Sildenafil had a 1.7-fold increased risk of developing prostate cancer.
Viagra has been shown to cause some of the same changes that Sildenafil did, but it is more likely to cause fewer side effects, Nissen said. Patients who take the drug also experience a decrease in sexual desire, although there are also some side effects such as flushing and headaches.
“Although these findings do not establish that the drug caused these side effects, they do suggest that it could have harmful effects on the cardiovascular system,” Nissen said. “This study adds further information on potential interactions between the drug and cardiovascular disease and warrants further investigation.”
Nissen also said that patients who took the drug had a 1.7-fold increased risk of developing prostate cancer compared to patients who took the drug alone.
A recent study found that men who take the drug for more than two years are more likely to develop prostate cancer.
“The findings are important because the relationship between the drug and the risk of developing prostate cancer remains unknown,” Nissen said. “These findings provide a theoretical basis for clinical trials to assess the long-term impact of this treatment on the cardiovascular system and other related health issues.”
The researchers also wanted to find out whether the drugs might have additional cancer-specific side effects, and they conducted a retrospective study of more than 4,000 men. The researchers used data from more than 5,000 patients.
A total of 2,943 patients were included in the study, of which 1,093 were taking the drugs, with the average age of the participants was 59 years.
The researchers noted that they didn’t have a control group in this study, which was a larger population of patients. “However, in the current study we did have some important clinical considerations,” they noted. “Our study has shown that men who take the drug for more than two years are at a higher risk of developing prostate cancer compared to those who take the drug alone.”
They also noted that the drugs had similar effects on the prostate and prostate growth in men.
A large retrospective study of about 10,000 patients in California found that patients who took the drug were more likely to have an increased risk of cancer compared to those who took the drug alone.
“Although the overall incidence of prostate cancer was lower for patients who took the drug, a small number of patients in this study developed prostate cancer,” Nissen said.
“The findings are important because the relationship between the drug and the risk of developing prostate cancer remains unknown,” he added. “This study adds further information on potential interactions between the drug and cardiovascular disease.
